Community Health Extension Workers emphasizes care of the client/client system utilizing community health services in a variety of home and agency settings. The student is introduced to professional aspects of nursing in the community including historical developments and nursing practice, legal and ethical issues, strategies and tools for promoting health, nursing care of at-risk aggregates across the life span, and issues and concerns in community health nursing. Community health concepts and skills for promoting individual, family, and community wellness are stressed.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the course the student is expected to:

1. Discuss historical developments, roles, practice settings, and functions as a
framework for community health nursing.
2. Utilize the nursing process in the care of the individual, family, and community as the
client/client system.
3. Explain organizational structure and financing of the health care delivery system.
4. Collaborate with members of the community health team in utilizing community
resources to provide holistic nursing care to the client/client system.
5. Discuss the processes of health education, health promotion, group process, and
continuity of care in community health nursing.
6. Apply community health nursing concepts of levels of prevention, epidemiology,
program planning, quality assurance, leadership and change when providing
client/client system care.
7. Recognize the needs of and services available for the at-risk client/client system.
8. Discuss legal, ethical, political, sociocultural, nutritional, environmental, and
advanced technological issues in community health nursing.
9. Utilize research findings in providing care for the community as client.
